Charleston, South Carolina: Come Hungry and Ignore the Forecast
There are some cities you visit for the sights, some for the history, and some for the food. Charleston somehow manages to be all three. After a few days wandering historic streets, hopping between incredible restaurants, and realizing the weather forecast was almost always wrong, I completely understood why people rave about this city.
If you're planning a trip, my biggest piece of advice is simple: make reservations early, ask your servers for recommendations, and come ready to try something new.
Where We Stayed
We stayed on the marina side of Charleston at the Charleston Harbor Resort area, and it ended up being one of our favorite parts of the trip. Instead of constantly calling rideshares, we purchased all-day water taxi passes and used them to get back and forth into the city. It was a fun way to travel, gave us incredible views of the harbor, and still allowed us to spend time by the pool when we wanted a slower afternoon.
If you're considering accommodations, I'd recommend looking at either the Beach Club or Harborside properties at Charleston Harbor Resort.
The Charleston Food Scene Lives Up to the Hype
Before arriving, everyone told us Charleston was a foodie city. After one weekend there, I can confirm they're absolutely right.
Magnolias
If you're looking for a special dinner, make a reservation at Magnolias.
Fine dining can sometimes feel stuffy, but Magnolias manages to feel elevated while still embracing Charleston's Southern roots. Reservations can be difficult to find, which tells you everything you need to know.
One thing we learned quickly in Charleston: listen to your server. Ours guided us through the menu and every recommendation was spot on.

Stars Rooftop
One of my favorite memories from the trip wasn't even a fancy dinner.
We spent an evening at Stars Rooftop, sipping drinks under the string lights while taking in the Charleston skyline. It's surprisingly casual—think cans, plastic cups, and a laid-back atmosphere—but that's exactly what makes it special.
The bartender was fantastic, the energy was fun, and it ended up being one of those nights you talk about long after the trip is over.
Brown Dog Deli
For lunch, head to Brown Dog Deli.
Their sandwiches somehow feel both familiar and completely unique at the same time. Every option seemed to have an unexpected twist that made it memorable. The service wasn't our favorite experience of the trip, but the food easily made up for it.
Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams
Conveniently located right next to Stars is Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, which came highly recommended by almost everyone we talked to.
The first thing you'll notice is the waffle cones being made fresh right in front of you. The flavor selection isn't overwhelming, but every option feels thoughtful and original.
It's worth stopping by, even if you're just grabbing a scoop before an evening walk.
Leon's Oyster Shop
If there was one restaurant that kept coming up in conversations before our trip, it was Leon's Oyster Shop.
Locals recommended it. Travelers recommended it. Apparently celebrities recommend it too. Our server casually told us Whitney Port had been there the day before and that Darius Rucker is a regular.
What made the experience stand out wasn't the celebrity connections—it was the hospitality. Our server genuinely loved working there and enthusiastically walked us through the entire menu. We showed up with our luggage, completely casual, and still felt welcomed.
The food was excellent, but the experience was even better.

Indaco
One of the best recommendations we received came from a local who absolutely raved about Indaco.
The menu isn't huge, but that's often a good sign. Everything felt intentional. We followed our server's recommendations and ended up cleaning every plate.
If you're looking for a trendy Italian dinner with incredible flavors, put this one on your list.
Places We Couldn't Get Into (But Wish We Did)
Husk
Every Charleston guide seems to mention Husk, and after trying to get a reservation, I understand why.
Reservations were completely booked nearly two months in advance. If that's not a sign of a restaurant worth visiting, I don't know what is.
FIG
Another spot that consistently came highly recommended was FIG. Unlike Husk, you may have slightly better luck finding availability, so it's definitely worth checking before your trip.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Charleston
Make Reservations for Everything
I can't stress this enough.
Many restaurants either weren't accepting walk-ins or were fully booked. If there's somewhere you really want to try, reserve it as early as possible.
Don't Trust the Weather Forecast
This may have been the biggest surprise of the trip.
Several days showed rain in the forecast from morning until night, and most of that rain never actually appeared. If you see gloomy predictions before your trip, don't let them ruin your excitement.
Plan Ahead for Transportation
Uber and Lyft availability was surprisingly limited. We rarely found a ride that was less than 25 minutes away.
If you're on a schedule, plan ahead or book transportation in advance.
Explore on Foot
Some of our favorite moments came from simply wandering.
Spend time on Meeting Street, Broad Street, and King Street. Pop into shops, admire the architecture, and don't feel pressured to follow a strict itinerary.
Charleston rewards curiosity.
Ask Your Servers for Recommendations
This became our unofficial travel strategy.
Because Charleston's food scene is so strong, restaurant staff know exactly where to send you next. We listened to nearly every recommendation we received and were never disappointed.
In a city like Charleston, it's also the perfect place to step outside your comfort zone and order something you wouldn't normally choose.
You might just discover your new favorite meal.
Final Thoughts
Charleston exceeded every expectation I had.
The food was incredible, the people were welcoming, and every street felt like it belonged on a postcard. Whether you're planning a romantic getaway, a girls' trip, or a long weekend escape, Charleston is one of those rare destinations that feels both relaxing and exciting at the same time.
Just make your reservations early—and save room for dessert.
