A Local's Guide to Newport, Rhode Island: Beaches, Food, and Summer Must-Dos

If you're looking for a classic New England coastal getaway, Newport is hard to beat.

Between the beaches, sailing, seafood, shopping, and incredible ocean views, it's one of those places I find myself recommending over and over again. Whether you're planning a weekend trip or a longer summer vacation, Newport has a little bit of everything.

That said, there are definitely a few things I'd do again—and a few things I'd want to know before visiting.

Let's Start With the Beaches

One of the best parts about Newport is that you have options.

Easton's Beach (First Beach) gets a lot of attention because it's close to downtown, but our preference is always Second Beach (Sachuest Beach).

Why?

The facilities are better, the beach feels a little more relaxed, and having a snack shack nearby makes a huge difference when you're spending an entire day by the water. Sometimes the little conveniences matter, especially if you're traveling with family or planning to stay for several hours.

It's become our go-to beach whenever we're in Newport.

The Cliff Walk Is Absolutely Worth It

If Newport is known for one thing besides its mansions, it's the Cliff Walk.

The views are incredible. You're walking alongside the ocean with stunning waterfront homes on one side and dramatic coastal scenery on the other. It's one of those activities that truly lives up to the hype.

That being said, I don't personally consider it very kid-friendly.

Parts of the walk are paved and leisurely, while other sections have you navigating actual rocks. You can absolutely do it in flip-flops—we did—but there are areas where you're walking close to edges and uneven terrain. For me, it would be stressful with young children.

If you're comfortable walking and paying attention to your footing, it's an absolute must-do while visiting Newport.

Midtown Oyster Bar Is Always My Top Recommendation

When people ask where they should eat in Newport, my answer is immediate:

Midtown Oyster Bar.

No questions asked.

If possible, request a table on the rooftop deck or outdoor deck. The atmosphere is exactly what you want on a Newport summer evening.

The food is consistently excellent, the drinks are great, and the overall vibe feels quintessentially Newport.

One important note: make a reservation.

The restaurant gets busy, and the downstairs indoor area can become pretty rowdy during peak times. If you're looking for the full experience, the outdoor seating is where it's at.

Kilwins Is Expensive—but Worth It

After dinner, we almost always end up at Kilwins.

Yes, it's a chain.

Yes, you're probably going to spend more money on ice cream than you ever thought possible.

And yes, it's still worth it.

Whether you're grabbing ice cream, fudge, or one of their other sweet treats, it's the perfect way to end a night walking around downtown Newport.

The Viral Cinnamon Bun Is Actually Worth the Hype

If you've spent any time on social media recently, you've probably seen the famous cinnamon buns from Co-Dough.

Located inside Market on Broadway, this small Newport bakery has become a viral sensation thanks to its sourdough cinnamon buns that regularly sell out and draw long lines. The bakery's popularity has exploded thanks to TikTok and Instagram—and surprisingly, the hype is justified. (Rhode Island Monthly)

Expect a line.

Expect them to sell out.

And expect to wonder why you waited so long to try one.

I always love supporting small businesses, especially when the product actually delivers. This one does.

Treat Yourself to a Sunset Sail

If you're celebrating something special—or simply want one of the best experiences Newport has to offer—book a private sunset sail.

One option we loved was aboard Sloop Eleanor, a beautiful 48-foot classic sailing yacht that cruises Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay. The experience feels uniquely Newport, and there is something magical about being out on the water as the sun starts setting over the coastline. (Co-Dough)

It's peaceful, relaxing, and worth splurging on at least once.

The Landing Is the Perfect Post-Sail Stop

One of the best parts of doing a sunset sail?

Stepping off the boat and being immediately on the wharf.

We love heading over to The Landing for drinks and dinner afterward. It's fun, casual, and exactly what you want after being on the water.

This is not a fancy dining recommendation.

This is a "grab a drink, enjoy the atmosphere, and soak in Newport" recommendation.

Sometimes that's even better.

Diego's Is Great for Casual Mexican Food

If you're craving Mexican food or looking for an easy takeout option, Diego's is always a solid choice.

Whether you're grabbing tacos after the beach or picking something up to bring back to your hotel, it's consistently good and easy to recommend.

Shopping in Newport

One of my favorite ways to spend time in Newport is simply walking around downtown.

The shopping is charming, unique, and full of local boutiques. Is it inexpensive? Not particularly.

Is it fun to browse? Absolutely.

Just be prepared if you're visiting during peak summer weekends.

Downtown Newport gets packed.

Parking can feel impossible, sidewalks get crowded, and you'll be sharing the streets with plenty of fellow tourists. If you're someone who likes a slower pace, consider visiting earlier in the day or during the shoulder seasons.

A Few Final Newport Tips

  • Book restaurant reservations in advance.

  • Arrive early for beaches and popular attractions.

  • Plan extra time for parking during summer weekends.

  • Don't skip the Cliff Walk.

  • Schedule a sunset sail if it's in your budget.

  • Leave room for ice cream and a cinnamon bun.

Final Thoughts

Newport is one of those places that keeps you coming back.

Maybe it's the ocean views. Maybe it's the sailing culture. Maybe it's the seafood and ice cream combination that somehow feels perfectly normal there.

Whatever it is, Newport has a way of making a simple weekend feel like a true vacation.

Just be prepared to wait in line for a cinnamon bun—and trust me when I say it's worth it.
